The Essaouira day trip from Marrakech is the most popular coastal excursion from the city — and at €19/person, one of the best day trips in Morocco. A shared AC minibus departs daily at 08:30 from your hotel. Two and a half hours through argan forests and the Haouz plains bring you to Essaouira (historically Mogador) — a breezy Atlantic port with a UNESCO-listed Medina, the Skala ramparts (where Game of Thrones filmed Astapor), a fishing port full of blue boats, fresh seafood restaurants, and a long sandy beach. Free time to explore at your own pace. Back in Marrakech by 19:00–20:00.

How the Day Unfolds
Because it's private, every stop is adjustable. All days open — click any header to collapse.
Your driver picks you up from your Marrakech hotel (or nearest accessible point). Board a modern AC minibus (max 17 passengers) and head west through the Haouz plains. A coffee stop at Chichaoua village — a perfect halfway break.
As you near Essaouira, the landscape shifts to argan tree forests. Stop at a women's argan oil cooperative to see how the oil is extracted by hand — from cracking the nut to pressing the kernels. Free to visit, with the option to buy products directly from the producers at local prices.
Arrive in Essaouira — also known by its historical Portuguese name Mogador. Your driver drops you near the medina entrance. The rest of the day is free time at your own pace.
Enter the UNESCO Medina through the historic gates. Walk the Skala de la Ville — the sea-facing ramparts lined with 18th-century bronze cannons, used as Astapor in Game of Thrones. Panoramic views over the Atlantic, the port, and the Île de Mogador. Browse the artisan souks — Thuya woodcraft, silver jewellery, leather goods, and art galleries.
Head to the fishing port — iconic blue boats, fishermen mending nets, gulls circling overhead. Walk to the outdoor fish grills where you choose your fish and it's cooked in front of you. Or find a rooftop restaurant in the medina for a seafood tagine with Atlantic views. Budget 80–150 MAD.
Walk the long sandy beach south of the medina. Watch the windsurfers and kitesurfers — Essaouira's trade winds make it one of the best spots in Africa. Or find a café at Place Moulay Hassan and sip mint tea while listening to Gnawa street musicians.
Meet your driver near the medina entrance. The 2.5-hour return drive to Marrakech passes through the same scenic argan forests. A comfort stop along the way.
Drop-off at your hotel or nearest accessible point to your riad. Arrival time varies with traffic and season. A perfect day on the Atlantic coast — completely different from anything Marrakech offers.

"After 3 days in the chaos of Marrakech, Essaouira was like pressing a reset button. The Atlantic breeze, the blue boats, the quiet medina — it felt like a different country. We had fresh grilled fish at the port and walked the beach. Perfect day."
"Great value day trip. The drive through the argan forests was scenic, the cooperative visit was interesting, and Essaouira itself was charming. We had 4 hours to explore — enough for the medina, the port, a seafood lunch, and a walk on the beach."
"We went with our teenagers and everyone loved it. The shops in the medina are way more relaxed than Marrakech, the beach was great for the kids, and the port was fascinating. Our driver was friendly and punctual. Would recommend to any family."
