Day by Day
Three days from Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara. Because it's private, every stop is adjustable. All days open — click any header to collapse.
Your Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins at 08:00 AM with a scenic drive through the towering High Atlas Mountains, crossing the famous Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 metres). Along the way, your driver stops at traditional Berber villages where you can immerse yourself in local culture and admire the rugged mountain landscapes.
The highlight of Day 1: the iconic ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has served as backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Explore the maze-like streets, perhaps meet a local family, and climb to the hilltop for sweeping views. Lunch at a local restaurant with views of the ksar.
Continue via Ouarzazate, then through El Kelaa M'Gouna in the Valley of the Roses, renowned for its annual rose festival and Damascus rose cultivation. If visiting in spring (April–May), stop at an artisanal rose water distillation factory. Arrive at the Dades Valley — the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" — for dinner and overnight at your Hotel Babylon.
After breakfast, drive through the scenic Dades Valley to the oasis town of Tinghir. A guided walk through the lush oasis — palm groves stretching as far as the eye can see, trickling irrigation channels, and the town's rich history including its Jewish heritage visible in the old Tinghir Kasbah. Continue to the dramatic Todra Gorge, where towering cliffs rise 300 metres from a flat, walkable riverbed. Time to walk the canyon, photograph the rock formations, and enjoy the clear waters of the Todra River.
Continue southeast through Erfoud, known for its fossils and date market, and Rissani, the historic birthplace of Morocco's ruling Alaouite dynasty. By mid-afternoon, the golden waves of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon.
Mount your camel and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun drops toward the horizon. The light turns golden, then amber, then rose. Arrive at your luxury desert camp — a private ensuite tent with real beds, hot shower, quality linens, and electricity. A hearty Moroccan dinner under the stars, followed by Berber drumming around the campfire and some of the clearest night skies you'll ever see. Sandboarding in the dunes is included.
Rise early to catch the spectacular sunrise over the Sahara dunes — a breathtaking moment as the light spreads across the golden sand. After breakfast at camp, begin the journey northeast toward Fes — a completely different road from the one you arrived on, through landscapes the Merzouga return tour never reaches.
The road passes through the stunning Ziz Valley — a fertile corridor of expansive date palm groves and dramatic cliffs, offering perfect photo stops as you wind through its scenic landscapes. Continue to Midelt, a small town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, for lunch at a local restaurant with serene mountain views.
Drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains to the Berber village of Azrou, famous for its ancient cedar forests. Stop to meet the playful Barbary macaques that inhabit the area — one of the last wild populations in North Africa. A delightful experience for all ages. Continue to Ifrane, often called "the Switzerland of Morocco" for its alpine-style architecture and clean, green parks — a refreshing contrast to the desert. A short break for coffee before the final stretch to Fes, arriving around 17:00. Your driver drops you directly at your Fes accommodation, marking the end of this incredible 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert crossing.

"We had an absolutely wonderful experience. Our driver Ibrahim was exceptional — always punctual, cheerful, well-informed. The luxury camp truly embodied luxury amidst the desert, and the various stops along the journey left lasting impressions. Without a doubt, an amazing adventure."
"We needed to get from Marrakech to Fes and decided to make the desert crossing rather than fly. Best decision of the trip. Three days of stunning landscapes — Atlas, gorges, Sahara sunset, then the Ziz Valley and cedar forests on the way to Fes. Said made the drives enjoyable with his knowledge and great taste in music."
"Travelled with two kids (7 and 11). The private tour was perfect — flexible pace, child seats provided, our driver adapted everything. The Barbary apes at Azrou on Day 3 were the kids' absolute favourite. Arriving in Fes felt like the perfect end to an epic road trip."
"I'm a photographer and this one-way crossing gave me incredible variety — Atlas in the morning, kasbahs at midday, Sahara at sunset, then the Ziz Valley and cedar forests the next day. Four completely different ecosystems in 3 days. Private tour meant I could stop wherever the light was right."
