Where to Start — Marrakech or Fes?

Marrakech is the starting point for 85% of desert tours. It’s closer to both Erg Chebbi (via Ouarzazate and Dades) and Erg Chigaga (via Zagora). Most 3-day tours depart from Marrakech.

Fes works if you’re already in the north. The route goes through the Middle Atlas, cedar forests, and Ifrane — a different landscape entirely. A Fes-to-Marrakech desert tour is also an efficient way to connect the two cities with a desert night in between.

Every tour includes one night (minimum) sleeping in a desert camp near the dunes. Camp quality varies enormously — this is where your budget makes the biggest difference.

Standard Camp

Shared tents (4–8 beds), communal bathroom, basic but clean. Included on all shared and most private tours. Dinner around the campfire, Berber music, stargazing. This is the authentic experience.

Luxury Camp

What to Pack

Pack light — your main luggage stays in the vehicle. You only carry a small daypack to the camp. Essentials:

Clothing: Light layers for daytime, warm jacket/fleece for evenings (desert nights drop 15–20°C from daytime), scarf or buff for sand/wind protection, comfortable closed-toe shoes for dune walking.

Sun protection: Hat, sunglasses, SPF50 sunscreen — the desert sun is intense even in winter.

Tech: Camera, power bank (camps may have limited charging), headlamp for nighttime camp navigation.

Winter extras (Dec–Feb): Thermal base layer, warm sleeping bag liner, gloves, beanie. Nights can hit 0°C.

Safety & Practical Tips

Is it safe? Yes — Morocco Sahara tours are very safe with a licensed operator. The routes are driven daily, vehicles are maintained, and guides know the terrain. The main risks are sun exposure and dehydration — both easily managed.

Hydration: Drink 2–3L of water per day minimum. Water is included on all MDT tours. Bring a reusable bottle.

Tipping: Not mandatory, but customary. Guide: 100–200 MAD/day for the group. Driver: 50–100 MAD/day. Camp staff: 20–50 MAD.

Cash: Bring some MAD cash for souvenirs, drinks, and tips. ATMs are available in Ouarzazate and Tinghir but not once you’re in the desert.

Motion sickness: The Atlas Mountain roads are winding. If you’re prone to motion sickness, sit in front and take medication beforehand.
