Day by Day
Six days from Marrakech to Chefchaouen — south through the desert, then north through the cities. Desert first, Blue City last.
Pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad at 07:30 AM. Drive southeast into the High Atlas Mountains, climbing through Berber villages, almond groves, and hairpin bends to the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m). Photo stops at scenic viewpoints along the way — the mountain panoramas are stunning, especially in the morning light.
Descend to the iconic Aït Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Cross the river with a guide to explore the earthen alleyways, climb to the granary at the top for panoramic views, and photograph the classic postcard shot from across the river. Lunch nearby.
Continue to Ouarzazate for a brief stop at the Atlas Film Studios — the "Hollywood of Africa" where Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator were filmed. Drive east through the lush Skoura oasis — one of Morocco's largest palm groves — and past the Valley of the Roses toward the Dades Valley.
After breakfast, drive the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Tinghir. Walk through the lush Tinghir palm oasis along the riverbank, then enter the dramatic Todra Gorge — a narrow canyon with 300-metre limestone cliffs rising on either side. The light filtering into the gorge is extraordinary for photography. Lunch at a restaurant at the gorge entrance.
Continue east to Rissani — birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite dynasty and home to a traditional dates market. Pass through Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops, as the landscape flattens into the hammada (stone desert) approaching the Sahara.
Arrive in Merzouga and meet your camel caravan. Mount up for an unforgettable sunset trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes — the golden light turning amber, then rose, as you ride deeper into the sand sea. Your guide leads you to the luxury ensuite camp nestled among the dunes.
Wake before dawn for a sunrise camel ride back over the Erg Chebbi dunes — a peaceful, golden start to a long but scenic day. Watch the light creep across the sand from the top of a dune before riding back to camp for a Moroccan breakfast.
Head north from Merzouga, climbing through the stunning Ziz Valley — thousands of date palms, fortified kasbahs, and dramatic cliff faces. The scenery shifts rapidly from flat desert to lush valley as the elevation rises. Photo stops at the panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley.
Lunch in Midelt — the agricultural centre between the High Atlas and the Middle Atlas. A comfortable rest stop before continuing north through the mountains.
Meet your local Fes guide after breakfast. Start at the Royal Palace — the ornate brass doors and zellij tilework of the exterior are a photographer's dream. Continue to the Borj Sud hilltop fortress for a sweeping panoramic view over the entire walled medina — the best orientation point before diving into the streets below.
Enter the Fes Medina — the world's largest car-free urban area and one of the best-preserved medieval cities on earth. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded 859 AD, the world's oldest functioning university), the intricate Bou Inania Medersa, and the famous Chouara tanneries — where leather has been dyed in stone vats using traditional methods for centuries. The rooftop view over the tannery pits is iconic. Lunch at a traditional medina restaurant.
Explore the artisan souks — metalwork, leather, ceramics, textiles, and woodwork. Visit the Nejjarine Square and its ornate fountain. Your guide navigates the labyrinth of over 9,000 streets, explaining the history and craft traditions at every turn. Return to the riad late afternoon.
Depart Fes and drive west to Volubilis — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Morocco's best-preserved Roman ruins, dating to the 3rd century BC. Walk among the remarkably intact mosaics, the triumphal arch of Caracalla, the Capitol, and the columns of the basilica. The site sits on a fertile hilltop with views across olive groves — a peaceful contrast to the medina you've just left.
Continue northwest, climbing into the Rif Mountains. The landscape shifts from the dry Saïss Plain to green, forested peaks. The road winds through small Berber villages and terraced hillsides. Lunch en route.
Arrive in Chefchaouen — Morocco's famous Blue City, nestled between two peaks of the Rif. Check into your riad in the medina. The evening is yours to explore — stroll the blue-washed alleyways, photograph the iconic doorways and stairways, browse artisan shops selling handwoven blankets and leather goods, and find a rooftop cafe with mountain views. Dinner at the riad.
A leisurely morning in Chefchaouen — no rush, no driving. Hike up to the Spanish Mosque (about 20 minutes) for sweeping panoramic views over the blue medina and the Rif Mountains. The morning light on the blue walls is the best of the day for photography.
Return to the medina. Browse the artisan shops selling handwoven blankets, leather goods, and goat-cheese. Photograph the famous blue stairways and colourful doorways. Enjoy a coffee or fresh-squeezed orange juice at Plaza Uta el-Hammam — the town's central square, overlooked by the 15th-century kasbah.
Your 6-day Marrakech to Chefchaouen desert tour ends here. You're free to stay in Chefchaouen as long as you wish — it's the kind of town that rewards an extra day. If you need to reach Casablanca, a complimentary transfer is included the following day at no extra cost. The driver drops you at Mohamed V Airport or any Casablanca hotel.

"Starting with the desert was genius — we hit Erg Chebbi on Day 2 while we were most excited, then gradually transitioned through the cedar forests to Fes and finally the blue streets of Chefchaouen. Ending in the Blue City felt like the perfect finale to an incredible six days."
"Six days, six completely different worlds — kasbahs, gorges, golden dunes, cedar forests, the Fes Medina, and those impossible blue streets. Our driver Ali was exceptional. The free Casablanca transfer on Day 7 was a brilliant bonus."
"As a photographer, the south-to-north direction was perfect. Golden hour at Aït Ben Haddou on Day 1, sunrise dunes on Day 3, Fes tanneries on Day 4, Chefchaouen's blue walls on Day 5 evening. Six consecutive killer sessions."
"The progression from desert adventure to cultural immersion was perfectly paced. Our teenagers loved the camels and the campfire; we loved Fes and Chefchaouen. The guided Fes day was worth the whole trip alone. Ending in Chefchaouen with an extra day was the cherry on top."
