Early morning pickup from Marrakech. Scenic drive south through the Moulay Brahim gorge to Imi Oughlad (1,450m) at the foot of Toubkal National Park. Meet your licensed mountain guide and the Berber mule team.
A gentle 2-hour hike northeast along mule tracks through cornfields, pine forests, and juniper groves to Tizi N'Tachte (2,000m). Stop to look back on the Imlil and Ait Oussaden valleys — Berber villages scattered across the slopes below. Picnic lunch on the plateau at Imi N'Ifri. Then a slow 2.5-hour descent southwest to the red clay terraced village of Tiziane (1,750m).
Tiziane village guesthouse — your first night in a Berber home. Simple rooms, warm blankets, home-cooked dinner. The silence of the Atlas Mountains settles around you.
After breakfast, hike through walnut groves up the Ait Oussaden Valley to Tizi N'Taghrhourte (1,995m) and the Assaka spring. Panoramic views of the surrounding Atlas Mountains in complete silence. Picnic lunch at the spring — one of the most peaceful spots on the trek.
Descend through forest edges to the Berber village of D'knt (1,870m) — also known as Agouns N'Assoul. A traditional farming community where life has changed little in centuries. Sheep and goat herders on the hillsides. Women carrying firewood. Children waving from doorways.
D'knt village guesthouse — dinner and overnight in a Berber family home. By now you're settling into the rhythm of village life.
Three hours uphill through walnut groves, corn and barley fields, past shepherds and goat herders. Cross Tizi N'Tagdalte and descend through juniper forest to a spring for picnic lunch. Then wind down to the Azzaden Valley, entering the village of Tizi Oussem (1,850m) before continuing to the summer village of Tamsoult (2,250m).
Tamsoult mountain hut — your last village night before the mountain. Tomorrow the terrain changes completely. You've spent 3 days gently gaining altitude through villages — your body is well-prepared for what comes next.
After breakfast, a stiff climb on winding mule tracks up from the Azzaden Valley toward the Aguelzim Pass (3,560m). The terrain shifts from green valley to high-altitude rock and scree. This is where the trek transforms from cultural walking to serious mountain trekking.
Aguelzim Pass at 3,560m — panoramic views across the entire High Atlas range. Picnic lunch at the top. After 3 days of gradual ascent through villages, you arrive here naturally acclimatized — a huge advantage over trekkers who come straight from Marrakech.
Descend to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) — Les Mouflons or Club Alpin. Dormitory accommodation. Dinner at the refuge. Rest well — tomorrow is summit day.
Early start. The south cirque route — scree and boulders. After 4 days of gradual altitude gain, your body is the best-adjusted of any Toubkal trekker on the mountain. 3 hours to the summit of North Africa — 4,167m. The iconic triangular marker. 360° views over the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara, and the Marrakech plain.
Descend to the refuge for lunch, then down the Ait Mizane Valley past Sidi Chamarouch shrine and its waterfall to Imlil (1,740m). Your driver is waiting for the transfer back to Marrakech — arriving early evening. Five days. Three villages. One summit. Trek complete.

"The Berber village stays were the highlight of the entire trek. Sleeping in family homes, eating tagines cooked by local women, watching sunrise from a rooftop in Tiziane — these are the moments that stay with you. The summit was incredible too, but it was the villages that made this trip special."
"Trekking through the Atlas Mountains was like writing a love letter to nature. The panoramic views and the chance to learn about Berber culture made it an unforgettable journey. Our guide was exceptional — he knew every village, every family, every shortcut. The food on the mountain was better than most restaurants."
"We chose the 5-day trek specifically for the village experience and it did not disappoint. D'knt was our favourite — so remote, so peaceful, and the family who hosted us were incredibly welcoming. By summit day, we felt strong and acclimatized. Wouldn't change a thing about this itinerary."
"This is the trek to do if you actually want to experience Morocco. The 5-day format gives you time to slow down — no rushing, no altitude stress. The walnut groves, the shepherds, the spring at Assaka, the children waving from every village. And then suddenly you're at 4,167m looking at the Sahara. Perfectly paced."
"Booked the 5-day for our family (kids aged 12 and 14) and it was perfect. The first 3 days were manageable for everyone — moderate walking, incredible scenery, friendly villages. The final 2 days were harder but doable with the guide's encouragement. Standing on the summit as a family — unforgettable."
